NEW YORK STYLE On1 Salsabailar teach on1. This means that we start to dance on the first beat of the music.
New York style is very linear and is based on the follower (lady) staying in a straight line through her moves, with her partner (the leader) moving himself around his follower.
Typical moves in salsa: Mambo, Cucharacha, Back Step, Front Step, Ladies Turns, Leaders Turns, Cross Body Lead, Trading Places, Spinning, Individual shines, Ladies and Leaders Styling.
Once you have mastered the basics, each lesson will teach you how to put combinations of the above moves together (varying in difficulty) to make your dancing flow naturally.
Dance Floor Etiquette: Everyone has to learn sometime, which means experienced dancers should ask beginners to dance and start off slowly using the basic moves to judge how much the beginner knows.
If you have been dancing a while you should use your knowledge of beginner, improver and intermediate moves and gradually increase the level of dancing, ensuring your beginner is comfortable with the speed and moves of your dance.
Beginners! It is important that you accept a dance when you are asked, not only is it good dance floor ettiquette ( as it can be nerve wracking asking someone to dance!) but you will learn quicker the more you dance. Don't be afraid to ask the teacher to dance, its what they are there for!
Leaders! It's important that you maintain an awareness of your dance space throughout your dance and adapt your moves to accommodate smaller spaces. Your goal is to ensure your follower remains safe and unhurt on the dance floor and of course, will probably mean she will dance with you again!
Followers! it is important that you follow the leader. This means don't try and lead the dance, let the leader do this. You should try not to guess what is coming next, which can be difficult when free dancing the set move from the class..... and always thank the leader for the dance.
Saying no to a dance politely...there are times when you will not want to accept a request to dance, so regardless of the reason, be mindful of the other persons feelings. Provide a reason such as you have just had 3 dances in a row and need a drink or you have promised this dance to someone else and you can refuse without offending.
